BETTER UTILIZING INVESTMENTS TO LEVERAGE DEVELOPMENT:
THE BUILD GRANT
In 2019, the Consolidated Appropriations Act has appropriated $900 million to be awarded by the Department of Transportation for national infrastructure investments. Through the BUILD grant these funds are awarded to eligible and approved projects from various states. Eligible projects consist of highway/bridge/road projects, rail transportation projects, port infrastructure investments, and inter-modal projects. The BUILD Transportation Discretionary Grants were formerly called the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or the TIGER Discretionary Grants program. These funds stem from the program funded and implemented pursuant to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Funds shall be awarded to projects that have a significant local or regional impact. No greater than $25 million may be granted to the recipient while a single state cannot be given more than $90 million. These funds are only available for obligation until September 30, 2021 and must be expended September 30, 2026.
